Last chance for Hawks

EAGLEHAWK’S BFNL top three aspirations, and by extension its premiership hopes, go on the line at MyJet Oval on Saturday.
Nanjing Night Net

RIGHT MAN: Brenton Conforti could get the task of playing on Golden Square Corey Jones.

The fourth-placed Hawks must defeat home side Golden Square to have any chance of knocking the Bulldogs or Sandhurst out of the top three.

The Hawks haven’t been taken seriously as a premiership threat this season because they’ve failed to deliver each time they’ve played one of the big three.

They haven’t been blown away by Strathfieldsaye, Golden Square or Sandhurst, but one poor quarter of football has cost the Hawks dearly.

The last time the Hawks met Golden Square, the Bulldogs kicked five goals to one in the third quarter and won by 15 points.

In round nine against Sandhurst, Eaglehawk conceded seven goals in the second term and lost to the Dragons by 27 points.

The Hawks’ two games against reigning premier Strathfieldsaye have followed similar paths.

In round two, Eaglehawk was down by five goals at half-time, before holding its own in the second half to lose by 39 points.

In round 11, Eaglehawk outscored Strathfieldsaye for the final three quarters, but the damage had been done early when the Storm kicked seven goals to three in the first quarter.

“There’s been parts of matches where we’ve been in control, even at stages against Strathfieldsaye, but you have to put together four quarters of footy if you want to compete with the top sides,’’Eaglehawk coach Luke Monaghan said.

“It’s something we haven’t been able to do this year.”

The man Eaglehawk must stop is Golden Square star Corey Jones.

Jones didn’t play in Golden Square’s 15-point win earlier this season, but in three games last year against the Hawks he kicked 14 goals and was best on ground twice.

“Corey Jones is Corey Jones. If you worry about him too much, you’re not doing the right thing by Geary, Rosa, Daley, Baird and Herring,’’ Monaghan said.

“You’ve got to have the cattle to stop a man like that and not many teams do.We’ll put some time into him, butthere’s more to Square than just Jones.”

Politics plumbs new depths

IT’S not been a happy couple of weeks for the reputation of politics in Australia. Just as the furore of the travel expenses scandal was dying down we saw the prime minister of the country pull one last rabbit out the hat in his bid to further delay to legalisation of same-sex marriage.

And, finally, we’ve seen the independence of a royal commissioner, no less, called into question after it was revealed he had been booked to be the guest speaker at a Liberal Party fundraiser. After all that, even those few remaining idealistic voters who did not believe politicians were more interested in looking after their own than looking after their constituents would have been having second thoughts.

Just how did we get to this point? Has politics really descended so far that party apparatchiks either have no sense of what is expected from the rest of the community, or simply don’t care?

The anger surrounding royal commissioner Dyson Heydon being asked to give the annual Sir Garfield Barwick address is a case in point.

While Mr Heydon has now withdrawn from the engagement, it’s hard to comprehend how Liberal Party organisers could ever have thought inviting him to give the address was a good idea in the first place.

Mr Heydon is overseeing a royal commission into the unions that, from day one, has been branded a political witch-hunt by the government’s opponents.

And while it has uncovered some low-scale corruption, there has been nothing so far to justify the reported $61 million cost of the commission.

So you would have thought the last thing the Liberal Party would want to do would be to give the Labor Party more ammunition to support its claims of bias. But, apparently, no.

That’s either an appalling lack of political judgment, or an appalling lack of respect for the voting public. We’ll let you decide which.

Housing boom lifts earnings for REITs

houses and more houses Photo: Glenn HuntThe current reporting season has reached the halfway mark for the real estate investment trusts and as predicted, residential developments are the shining beacon.

Mirvac is one of the nation’s biggest home developers and has said the division is one of its main profit generators.

According to Citi analysts, Mirvac offers a compelling investment opportunity with a combination of upside risk to earnings and an undemanding valuation.

Mirvac chief executive Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz said while housing is buoyant, the double-digit price growth in NSW is unsustainable. But Citi analysts said the 2016 financial year earning’s guidance of 3  to 5.7per cent strikes them as conservative. “Development earnings will have a heavy skew to the second half, leaving room for doubt at the first half results. However, we think margins on projects settling in the second will be above average, and this represents upside risk,” the Citi analysts said. “Further, visibility on those development earnings is good, with 67per cent of 2016 financial year development earnings before interest and tax and 57per cent of 2017 financial year development EBIT has already been secured.”

The brokers added that Mirvac’s outlook commentary suggests ongoing positive conditions for residential markets, albeit  they expect the Sydney housing market’s rate of growth will moderate.

“This still looks like a favourable backdrop for fellow residential developer Stockland. The other stock with significant implications from the Mirvac Group result is Investa Office.

“Mirvac has confirmed that they are in exclusive due diligence to purchase the Investa management platform. While no deal has been agreed to, a sale of management rights to Mirvac could potentially see changes in the style of management and/or direction of Investa office.”

CLSA’s analysts said Mirvac’s residential business was the standout in this result, with record contracts on hand providing strong visibility of earnings. “However, despite hitting the top end of its guidance, dilutive asset sales and increased sales and marketing costs associated with an 80per cent increase in lots released dragged down the result,” the analysts at CLSA said.

“We expect Mirvac to tighten guidance towards the top end at first half of 2016 and reiterate a buy recommendation.”

Goodman Group was another beneficiary of the housing boom, selling $1.1 billion of land to residential developers in the year to June 30. UBS said they remain supportive of the business model.

GPT, Stockland, Federation, Charter Hall and Scentre are to report their results in the coming week.
