TweetFacebookCURIOUS children were captivated as the secrets behind making paper planes were unveiled in a workshop with paper plane champion Dylan Parker.

Mr Parker, who is depicted in the film Paper Planes as Dylan Webber, led 50 Newcastle East Public School students through the theory of avionics on Friday before unveiling a range of simple designs to practise.

The school grounds were soon filled with hundreds of paper planes as the children mimicked Mr Parker’s designs.

‘‘Kids are so surprised that they can use a piece of paper and create something that can fly,’’ he said.

‘‘Some of the most amazing paper planes are the simple ones.’’

The workshop was part of the school’s focus to help students engage with science and address the declining interest in physics and chemistry in years 11 and 12.

Principal John Beach said the school had a strong science program that ‘‘made science relevant’’ and a range of activities would take place next week to mark National Science Week.

‘‘They had fun and the tips Dylan gave them to improve the flight of their planes were practical,’’ Mr Beach said.

Dylan and his business partner James Norton are touring schools across the country as The Paper Pilots to show children how to build paper planes.
